International Workers' Day ( 1st May every year)

"International Labor Day or May Day" is celebrated on 1st May every year.

Every year, International Labour Day is observed to raise awareness about the struggles and the contributions of the workers and the working class to society. The workers and the working class are the driving force of a country. They are the ones who do most of the work to initiate development. The nation and the state are built by its infrastructure, development and the economy. The workers get down to the roots of things and start work at the basic level to initiate positive changes to the country and the world.

Workers and the working class are extremely important as they are the backbone of a society. We should ensure that we take care of their well being regularly and listen to their issues.

In 1886, a large demonstration happened in America where the labours demanded eight hours of work on a daily basis. However, soon the demonstration went out of hand and in Chicago and lot of people got hurt. This incident came to be known as The Haymarket Affair. This incident marked the start of the International Labour Day. In 1889, a lot of socialist parties in Europe came together and decided to celebrate May 1 as International Labour Day. Since then, the special day has been observed every year on the same day.

International Labour Day helps us to recognise the contributions of the labours and the working class in development of the society and the country. It also urges the labours to learn about their rights. Labours are often exploited, and it is important that they know their rights to protect themselves. It also urges people to come together to develop the working and living conditions of the workers.

Theme for International Labour Day 2025 is "Social justice and decent work".

Reason for celebration :

It honors the labor movement and the contributions of workers to society.

In different countries, May 1st may also have other meanings:

The date was chosen to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago, which occurred in         early     May 1886 during the fight for an eight-hour workday.

  • Pagan/Seasonal celebrations: In parts of Europe, May Day has older roots as a spring festival celebrating fertility and the changing of seasons.

  • Public holidays: Many countries observe it as a national holiday with parades, protests, or festivals.

  • Religious observances: The Catholic Church celebrates Saint Joseph the Worker on May 1st.

    Global Observance

Labour Day is marked by rallies, marches, speeches, and community events. While the specific traditions vary by country, the themes of solidarity, workers’ rights, and social justice remain consistent. In some nations, it is a day for political activism and union demonstrations; in others, it is celebrated as a public holiday with festivals, cultural events, and family gatherings.

Countries such as India, Germany, France, Brazil, and China observe Labour Day with official public holidays. In contrast, countries like the United States and Canada celebrate their version of Labor Day in September, although May 1st is still recognized by many labor organizations.

    Why Labour Day Still Matters

In an era of globalization, automation, and shifting job markets, the significance of Labour Day remains more relevant than ever. It is a day to:

  • Reflect on the progress made in workers’ rights, including minimum wage laws, safety standards, and fair working hours.

  • Acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by workers, such as job insecurity, wage gaps, and unsafe working conditions in some parts of the world.

  • Promote dignity, equality, and justice in the workplace, ensuring that workers continue to have a voice and agency in shaping their futures.

Conclusion

Labour Day is not just a date on the calendar—it is a tribute to the perseverance and power of the working class. As we celebrate on May 1st, we honor the sacrifices of past generations and recommit to building a fair and inclusive future for all workers. Their hands have built the world, and their rights must continue to be protected.

"I learned the value of hard working by working hard".

"Let this special day remind you that every drop of your sweat is building a brighter tomorrow. Happy International Workers’ day
